Emergency Response Team (ERT) Procedure

Definition: In the event of a major disaster the ERT may be activated. The ERT is comprised of staff and community service volunteers. Their role is to provide first aid and to assist other emergency response agencies.

  1. The Manager, or a designate must be contacted before the ERT is activated.
  2. The Manager, or a designate shall be notified of the following:
    1. Nature of the emergency;
    2. Location of the emergency;
    3. The time the volunteers are expected to arrive and leave SJA premises;
    4. How many volunteers will be on SJA premises and for how long;
    5. What types of activities they will be performing while on SJA premises; and
    6. Where they will be on SJA premises.
  3. The Manager or their designate shall notify the after hours monitoring service (451-1974) of the after hours use of the premises.
  4. Upon arriving at the premises ERT members shall follow the Parkade, Stairwell, Elevator and Section Alarm Procedures as required.
  5. The ERT Supervisor shall disarm only the section alarmed area that requires access.
  6. Upon arrival ERT members shall follow the sign in/sign out procedure:
    1. The sign in/sign out book for the ERT is kept in the volunteer common room; and
    2. All volunteers must visibly wear SJA approved identification.
  7. The after hours monitoring service must be contacted hourly (451-1974) by the ERT supervisor or their designate.
  8. The monitoring service will respond in person if not contacted hourly.
  9. In the event of an emergency while on the premises notify the appropriate emergency response agency and follow the Evacuation Procedures if required.
  10. Upon departure the ERT shall follow the Sign in/Sign out Procedures and ensure the ERT sign in/sign out book is returned to the volunteer common room.
  11. The ERT supervisor or their designate shall notify the after hours monitoring service of their departure.
  12. ERT personnel shall follow the Section Alarm and Parkade, Stairwell and Elevator Procedures as required upon leaving the premises.
