Emergency Calls in Alberta Council

Managers and Directors have been equipped with the Mitel 5240 IP Phone Appliance. In addition to acting as a telephone, the 5240 allows for monitoring of events that occur within the voice communications system of SJA. Having this appliance, however, means that you must incur extra responsibilities. One of these responsibilities is dealing with emergency situations that may occur. Your 5240 is programmed to set off an alarm if an emergency call is dialed from within the facility.

Dialing Emergency Calls

Emergency Calls can be dialed in the following manner:

  • Dial 911 OR
  • Dial 9 (for outside line) + 911

Either of these combinations will connect to emergency services.

Also:

  • Dial 1011

This will not connect to emergency services or any particular extension, but will set off an alarm. This is a panic code that may be entered into any phone within the building.

Emergency Call Alarms

If an emergency call is dialed within the facility, your 5240 IP Phone will start alarming.

Procedure

  1. Press the “Emergency Call” indicator button on your phone.
  2. If you are the first person to press the button, you will see the message “Emergency Call from ________________”, with the extension number and name of the phone that the call has been placed from.
  3. You must now verify the emergency. Send someone or physically go to the location of the emergency. Either provide assistance, or ensure that the situation is dealt with.
  4. To shut off the alarm, press the “Delete Alarm” button on your phone, OR If you are not the first person to press the “Emergency Call” button, it will tell you “______________ has access”, with the extension number and name of the person that is accessing the emergency call alarm indicator.
  5. Verify that the person with access to the indicator is dealing with the emergency.
